Meet Sabiya M. Amanat, DDS of Scarsdale Dental Spa

Scarsdale Dental Spa is pleased to introduce you to our new Pediatric Specialist Sabiya M. Amanat, DDS. With over 10 years of experience, “Dr. Sabiya” will be heading up our Pediatric division.

Dr. Sabiya is specifically trained to provide dental services to all ages of children from infants to teens. She is committed to helping children learn how to care for their teeth and loves to spend time getting to know each patient, so your child feels that they have a friend who just happens to be their dentist.

Dr. Sabiya received her BA degree from Barnard College in 1992 with a major in Anthropology and continued her education by obtaining her dental degree from Columbia University College of Dental Medicine in 1996. Immediately following her dental education she obtained her specialty certificate in Pediatric Dentistry from Long Island Jewish Schneider’s Children’s Hospital in 1998 with an emphasis on children, special needs children and medically compromised children. In addition to private practice, Dr. Sabiya was an attending at Columbia University College of Dental Medicine from 1999 to 2008 and an active member of the dental school admissions committee from 2003-2007.

Dr. Sabiya was born and raised in Long Island and has resided in Manhattan since college. She is the mother of three boys. As a dentist she understands the importance of early prevention and detection of caries and as a mother she understands the busy life style of raising children in the city, questions of when to bring a child to the dentist and the thoughts many parents feel, “My child will never be able to sit in the chair.” Dr. Sabiya will teach your child that dental visits are part of a healthy routine and still talk to you as a concerned parent with your questions. Young patients are encouraged to express themselves freely while we count and clean teeth. It sets up the beginnings of a wonderful dentist/patient relationship. By starting tooth/mouth exams early, it may lead to detection of early stages of tooth decay that can be easily treated.

Dr. Sabiya is dedicated to providing pediatric dental care in a warm nurturing environment and providing the best treatment for your child.

On a personal note, Dr. Sabiya enjoys traveling, running, and spending time with her 3 sons on Manhattan’s Upper West Side.

Dental Emergencies during Hurricane Sandy

Hurricane Sandy is bearing down on the East Coast and most business are closed. Government officials caution us to stay home where it's safe. We hope you won't have a dental emergency during this super-storm, but here is some good advice just in case.

What to do in a dental emergency when you can't get to a dentist:

TOOTHACE
Take two aspirin or acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Ibufrofen (Advil) may be the best choice since it relieves inflammation as well. However, do not place an aspirin next to a tooth. You may have heard of this "remedy", but it actually does more harm than good. Placing an aspirin directly on your gum causes an ulceration of the tissue, commonly referred to as an aspirin burn.

Here are some home remedies that might help:

  • Apply oil of cloves. Follow the directions for use carefully and be sure to put it only on the tooth and not on the gum.
  • Cool the swelling: Place a cold compress on the outside of your cheek if there is swelling from your toothache. You can also try holding an ice cube or cold water in your mouth if your teeth are not sensitive to cold.
  • Elevating your head can decrease the pressure in the area and lessen the throbbing.
  • Rinsing with warm water can remove food debris which could be aggravating the area. Stir in one teaspoon of salt into a glass of warm water, swish it around and then spit it out. You can also try flossing away food debris.
  • Avoid eating or drinking anything hot, cold or sweet because it might make matter worse if you have sensitivity.
  • If the tooth feels sensitive to air, place a piece of gauze or even a bit of chewed sugarless chewing gum to plug up the area until you can get to the dentist.

BITTEN LIP OR TONGUE
Cleanse the area gently with a cloth and apply cold compresses to reduce swelling. If the bleeding doesn't top, go to a hospital emergency room.

BROKEN TOOTH
Rinse your mouth with warm water to clean the area. Use cold compresses to keep swelling down.

CRACKED TOOTH
Avoid chewing on that side and get to a dentist as soon as you can.

OBJECTS CAUGHT BETWEEN TEETH
Try to gently remove the object with dental floss; avoid cutting the gums. Never use a sharp instrument to remove any object that is stuck between your teeth. If you can’t dislodge the object using dental floss, contact your dentist.

With any dental emergency, make sure you make an appointment to see your dentist as soon as possible, even if pain subsides.

Our sincere best wishes to you all as we ride out this storm.

Halloween Treat Advice from a Dentist

The best and worst Halloween treats for kids

The best treats would be non-sugary goodies such as:

  • stickers
  • small party favor toys
  • glow-in-the-dark insects
  • rubber worms.

Small boxes of raisins, almonds, sunflower seeds, pistachios or even pretzels are healthier than most candies.

The worst treats are chewy and sticky candies such as taffy and gummies that get stuck in the crevices of the teeth. High acid candies such as Lemonheads, Warheads and Sour Patch Kids can break down tooth enamel.

We also advise our patients to wait about 30 minutes before brushing after eating sour candies, allowing your saliva to restore the natural balance of acid in your mouth.

Here are some candy comparrisons, as cited in Real Simple Magazine

  • Choose Snickers over Reese's Peanut Butter Cups because it has less fat and fewer calories
  • Choose Peanut M&M's over Skittles because the peanuts help lower the glycemic index so the sugar is released more slowly in the bloodstream
  • Choose Kit Kat over Twix to save calories and due to smaller amounts of sodium and fat
Parents should also monitor the amount of candy intake at Halloween, and all year round.

Health Facts: Gum Disease

Did you know that 78% of the adult population has some form of periodontal disease?

When gums become infected and inflamed from periodontal disease, bacteria in plaque can spread and grow below the gum line. The bacteria can then enter into the blood stream and travel to major organs and begin new infections. Ongoing research suggests that periodontal disease is linked to heart disease, osteoporosis, and diabetes.

If your gums bleed or teeth look longer, request an appointment or call our office at 914.713.2424 to discuss your periodontal health.

Dental Care and Dementia

On our last blog post we discussed how brushing your teeth with your non-dominant hand could help give your brain cells a boost, and today we are excited about the new study on Dentition, Dental Health Habits and Dementia which explores the association between good dental health and lower cases of dementia. 5468 adults, with the average age of 81, were followed from 1992 to 2010 regarding dental health, specifically on the number of natural teeth, dentures worn, number of visits to the dentist and oral health habits. The research shows that in addition to helping maintaining natural, healthy, functional teeth, oral health behaviors are associated with lower risk of dementia in older adults.

This study supports the importance of taking care of your teeth. Please remember to:

  • Brush your teeth twice a day with a soft-bristled brush. The size and shape of your brush should fit your mouth allowing you to reach all areas easily.
  • Replace your toothbrush every three or four months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed. A worn toothbrush won’t do a good job of cleaning your teeth.
  • Make sure to use an ADA-accepted fluoride toothpaste.
  • Clean between teeth daily with floss or an interdental cleaner. Tooth decay-causing bacteria still linger between teeth where toothbrush bristles can’t reach. This helps remove plaque and food particles from between the teeth and under the gum line.
  • Eat a balanced diet and limit between-meal snacks.
  • Visit your dentist regularly for professional cleanings and oral exams.

Give Your Brain Cells A Boost While Brushing Your Teeth

We all know how important it is to brush your teeth, for a healthy mouth and smile, but did you know that if you brush with your non-dominant hand you can also give your brain cells a boost?  Doing simple tasks such as brushing your teeth, combing your hair, opening jars, washing dishes and even eating with chopsticks with your opposite hand actually strengtheners neural connections in your brain and will help grown new ones.  It might feel awkward to do some of these tasks, but brushing your teeth with the opposite hand is pretty easy once you get used to it.

Don't forget, when brushing to use a soft-bristled brush that fits your mouth and allows you to reach all areas easily.  Replace your toothbrush every three or four months or as soon as the bristles are frayed.

Health Facts: Diabetes and Periodontal Disease

Did you know that 95% of diabetic patients have periodontal disease?

Diabetes and periodontal disease are closely linked. Diabetic patients are more likely to develop periodontal disease and people with periodontal disease are more likely to develop diabetes. Treating and managing one of these conditions can help improve the other.

If you are diabetic, or have risk factors for diabetes, such as a family history, or high cholesterol, contact us to discuss your periodontal health. Request an appointment or call our office at 914.713.2424 to schedule a personal consultation during your next visit.

What to Do For a Toothache

A toothache should not be overlooked, but what can you do if it's 2:00 in the morning and you can't get right to a dentist?

Take two aspirin or acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Ibufrofen (Advil) may be the best choice since it relieves inflamation as well.

The best cure for a toothache is a trip to your dentist to find out what’s causing the pain. Even if the pain goes away it does not mean the problem is gone, so don't ignore it.

Veneers - Improving Your Smile

There's no reason to put up with gaps in your teeth or with teeth that are stained, badly shaped or crooked. Today a veneer placed on top of your teeth can correct nature's mistake or the results of an injury and help you have a beautiful smile.

Veneers are thin, custom-made shells crafted of tooth-colored materials designed to cover the front side of teeth. They're made by a dental technician, usually in the dental lab, working from a model provided by your dentist.

Your dentist may recommend that you avoid some foods and beverages that may stain or discolor your veneers such as coffee, tea or red wine. Sometimes a veneer might chip or fracture. But for many people the results are more than worth it.

Request an appointment or call our office to schedule a personal consultation during your next visit.

TMD/TMJ (Temporomandibular Disorders)

According to the American Dental Association, more than fifteen percent of American adults suffer from chronic facial pain. Some common symptoms include pain in or around the ear, tenderness of the jaw, clicking or popping noises when opening the mouth, or even headaches and neck aches.

Two joints and several jaw muscles make it possible to open and close the mouth. They work together when you chew, speak, and swallow. These structures include muscles and ligaments, as well as the jaw bone, the mandible (lower jaw) with two joints, the TMJ's.

Diagnosis And Treatment

A dentist can help identify the source of the pain with a thorough exam and appropriate X-rays. Often, it's a sinus, toothache or an early stage of periodontal disease. But for some pain, the cause is not so easily diagnosed. The pain could be related to the facial muscles, the jaw ortemporomandibular joint, located in the front of the ear. Treatments for this pain may include stress reducing exercises, muscle relaxants, or wearing a mouth protector to prevent teeth grinding. They've been successful for many and your dentist can recommend which is best for you.

Request an appointment or call our office to schedule a personal consultation during your next visit.

Teeth Whitening: Get Your Smile Back

Let's face it: one of the first things you notice about people is their smile. When you meet someone with a bright, natural smile, it catches your attention. However, over time, the natural aging process and your lifestyle (smoking or drinking coffee, tea, or wine) can stain your teeth. To get your smile back to looking its best, you should choose a whitening method that:

  • Achieves the longest-lasting results
  • Gives you the most naturally brilliant and uniform look
  • Is clinically proven to be safe and effective
  • Is administered by dental professionals

A teeth whitening can make you look and feel younger, more attractive and more confident. Request an appointment or call our office to schedule a personal consultation during your next visit.

Periodontal (Gum) Disease

Periodontal (gum) diseases, including gingivitis and periodontitis, are serious infections that, left untreated, can lead to tooth loss. The word periodontal literally means 'around the tooth'. Periodontal disease is a chronic bacterial infection that affects the gums and bone supporting the teeth.

Periodontal disease can affect one tooth or many teeth. It begins when the bacteria in plaque (the sticky, colorless film that constantly forms on your teeth) cause the gums to become inflamed.

You may be at risk of gum disease if you answer yes to any of the following questions:
Do your gums ever bleed?
Are your teeth loose?
Have your gums receded, or do your teeth look longer?
Do you smoke or use tobacco products?
Have you had any adult teeth extracted?
Has it been more than 2 years since seeing a dentist?
Have any of your family members had gum disease?

In the mildest form of the disease, gingivitis, the gums redden, swell and bleed easily. There is usually little or no discomfort. Gingivitis is often caused by inadequate oral hygiene. Gingivitis is reversible with professional treatment and good oral home care.

Request an appointment or call our office to schedule a personal consultation during your next visit.

Oral Cancer - The Importance of Early Detection

According to the American Dental Association, there is recent good news about progress against cancer. It is now easier than ever to detect oral cancer early, when the opportunity for a cure is great. Currently only half of all patients diagnosed with oral cancer survive more than five years.

Our practice has the skills and tools to ensure that early signs of cancer and pre-cancerous conditions are identified. We can help you fight and win the battle against oral cancer. Know the early signs and see your dentist regularly.

You Should Know:
Oral cancer often starts as a tiny, unnoticed white or red spot or sore anywhere in the mouth.
It can affect any area of the oral cavity including the lips, gum tissue, check lining, tongue and the hard or soft palate.

Other Signs Include:
A sore that bleeds easily or does not heal
A color change of the oral tissues
A lump, thickening, rough spot, crust or small eroded area
Pain, tenderness, or numbness in the mouth or on the lips
Difficulty chewing, swallowing or moving the jaw or tongue
A change in the way the teeth fit together

Regular Dental Check-ups Important

Regular dental check-ups, including an examination of the entire mouth, are essential in the early detection of cancerous and pre-cancerous conditions. You may have a very small, but dangerous, oral spot or sore and not be aware of it.

Request an appointment or call our office to schedule a personal consultation during your next visit.

Make Time To Floss Every Day - Here's How [Diagram]

According to a survey, 75% of Americans would rather go grocery shopping than floss their teeth. Another survey shows that only 49% of Americans floss daily and 10% never floss. Flossing is even more important than brushing when it comes to preventing gum disease and tooth loss.

There are many types of floss available. Chose one that is right for your teeth.  If you have very tight contacts between your teeth, or the floss snags or breaks while flossing, look for a waxed floss or one sold under the name of "Glide." If you are a patient of Scarsdale Dental Spa, ask us for help in picking out a floss that will work best for your needs.

There are other options available such as Stim-U-Dents or Soft-Picks that can be used besides or instead of floss. You can use a floss holder (disposable Y-shaped device). Use whatever it takes to make it easier for you.

Make time to floss everyday. If you are too tired to floss before going to bed, floss in the morning or in the afternoon after lunch. Some people keep floss in the car and floss when stuck in traffic.

Here is how the American Dental Association describes the process of flossing correctly:

  • Start with about 18 inches of floss. Wrap most of it around the middle finger of one hand, the rest around the other middle finger.
  • Grasp the floss tightly between your thumbs and forefingers, and use a gentle shoeshine motion to guide it between teeth.
  • When the floss reaches the gum line, form a C shape to follow the contours of the tooth.
  • Hold the floss firmly against the tooth, and move the floss gently up and down.
  • Repeat with the other tooth, and then repeat the entire process with the rest of your teeth (“unspooling” fresh sections of floss as you go along).

Stop into Scarsdale Dental Spa and ask us to show you how to floss and take proper care of your teeth.

Dental Anxiety and Phobia

Women in their 40s are more likely to fear the dentist more than any other age group, according to an ongoing University of Sydney study. The study, now in its fifth year, shows that women of this age were most likely to have perceived a "traumatic dental experience, abuse, trauma and oro-facial trauma." These women were also more likely to be depressed, have general anxiety, suffer from stress and also had trouble coping with pain, often perceiving pain in "alarmist ways" like it's a catastrophe. Premature Tooth Loss in Children and Good Dental Advice for Adults

Baby teeth maintain the spacing for permanent teeth, increasing the likelihood that permanent teeth will come in straight. According to the American Dental Association, or ADA, most kids start losing, or shedding, their teeth around the age of 6. Wiggly teeth can appear at an even earlier age, especially if your child cut her teeth early. Children generally lose their baby teeth between the ages of 6 and 12 years old.

If your child loses a tooth prematuraly they should be reviewed by a family dentist immediately. The tooth should be placed in a moist solution like milk while en route to the dentist.

If your child is active and suffers a traumatic blow that causes a tooth to come loose follow these steps:

  • Remain calm and assess the injury
  • Control the bleeding
  • Determine if the injury needs more urgent medical attention than just a tooth loss
  • Call your family dentist office as soon as possible and ask to advise you on getting the patient and the tooth to them. They may recommend storing the tooth in water, milk or the child's saliva.

Accidents do happen, and knowing what to do when one occurs can mean the difference between saving and losing a tooth. The same advice holds true for adults. One way to reduce the chances of damage to your teeth, lips, cheek and tongue is to wear a mouthguard when participating in sports or recreational activities that may pose a risk. Avoid chewing ice, popcorn kernels and hard candy, all of which can crack a tooth. Cut tape using scissors rather than your teeth.

Most dentists reserve time in their daily schedules for emergency patients. Call your dentist and provide as much detail as possible about your condition. Remember, pain is a signal that something is wrong—a problem that will not disappear even if the pain subsides.

Scarsdale Dental Spa: Smiles For Kids Program

Joyce Greene, a local business owner here in Scarsdale, is always looking for ways to help people. She especially likes to help children.

Once again, Scarsdale Dental Spa is opening its doors to community children who don’t currently have access to the proper dental care. Each year, to honor National Dental Health Month, through its “Smiles For Kids” program, the unique practice provides dental care and services in addition to education to those families whose children cannot afford to visit a dentist regularly.

It is very important to nurture children in an environment where they feel safe and comfortable. Effective learning occurs during activities which children perceive as fun and non-threatening. Many adult patients don’t get the care they need as a result of early childhood dental experiences.

All throughout the year, parents and guardians can bring in children to get a free dental exam, necessary x-rays (all safe digital system) and comprehensive cleaning and fluoride treatments. All these services are provided at no charge. Families also receive information which can help them to maintain good oral health between visits to the dentist.

Scarsdale Dental Spa is located in the Lord & Taylor shopping center at 700 White Plains Road in Scarsdale. It has become Westchester’s premiere spot for patients who demand the highest quality dentistry as well as those patients who have fears that kept them from getting the dental care they need.
