Dr. Vermani is a graduate of Boston University with degrees in General Dentistry and Advanced Education in General Dentistry. Dr. Monika Vermani joined Scarsdale Dental Spa in 2008. Dr. Vermani has 10 years of experience practicing general dentistry in Connecticut and New York. Prior to joining Scarsdale Dental Spa, Dr. Vermani spent 8 years as a dentist in two private dental practices in Connecticut. Dr. Vermani uses her many years of experience to provide her patients state of the art dentistry and her gentle touch enhances the truly relaxing experience in the spa.

Premature Tooth Loss in Children and Good Dental Advice for Adults

Baby teeth maintain the spacing for permanent teeth, increasing the likelihood that permanent teeth will come in straight. According to the American Dental Association, or ADA, most kids start losing, or shedding, their teeth around the age of 6. Wiggly teeth can appear at an even earlier age, especially if your child cut her teeth early. Children generally lose their baby teeth between the ages of 6 and 12 years old.

If your child loses a tooth prematuraly they should be reviewed by a family dentist immediately. The tooth should be placed in a moist solution like milk while en route to the dentist.

If your child is active and suffers a traumatic blow that causes a tooth to come loose follow these steps:

Remain calm and assess the injury
Control the bleeding
Determine if the injury needs more urgent medical attention than just a tooth loss
Call your family dentist office as soon as possible and ask to advise you on getting the patient and the tooth to them. They may recommend storing the tooth in water, milk or the child's saliva.

Accidents do happen, and knowing what to do when one occurs can mean the difference between saving and losing a tooth. The same advice holds true for adults. One way to reduce the chances of damage to your teeth, lips, cheek and tongue is to wear a mouthguard when participating in sports or recreational activities that may pose a risk. Avoid chewing ice, popcorn kernels and hard candy, all of which can crack a tooth. Cut tape using scissors rather than your teeth.

Most dentists reserve time in their daily schedules for emergency patients. Call your dentist and provide as much detail as possible about your condition. Remember, pain is a signal that something is wrong—a problem that will not disappear even if the pain subsides.

On our previous blog posts we told you a little about our Smiles For Kids program but today we would like to also remind you that “Smiles For Kids” supplies educational materials on a variety of dental subjects to parents and guardians, so community children can get the knowledge they deserve. The staff at Scarsdale Dental Spa also attends area schools each February to support a grass roots educational campaign. Many parents have praised these efforts by visiting our office themselves and telling our team what great brushing and eating habits these school programs have developed in their children.

The Spa also encourages other individuals and organizations who wish to support “Smiles For Kids” to contribute any available resources to continue these efforts.

Joyce is an entrepreneur and business consultant, with more than 25 years experience in the dental field. In addition, Joyce received Reiki Master level in 2006. Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing.

Joyce Greene - Personally

Joyce is married to Dr. David Greene, the practice's Executive Director. She has myriad personal interests including interior decorating, cooking, entertaining, gardening, movies, collecting antiques, her cats Vinnie and Louie, and especially ballroom dancing (which is how she met David.) Her special joy is spending time with family and friends.

Joyce is an involved community member, theatre contributor, and supporter of women's organizations to stop domestic violence, animal shelters, The Lord's Pantry (an organization that supplies meals for HIV and AIDS patients in all of Westchester County) and "Smiles for Kids."

Joyce Greene, a local business owner here in Scarsdale, is always looking for ways to help people. She especially likes to help children.

Once again, Scarsdale Dental Spa is opening its doors to community children who don’t currently have access to the proper dental care. Each year, to honor National Dental Health Month, through its “Smiles For Kids” program, the unique practice provides dental care and services in addition to education to those families whose children cannot afford to visit a dentist regularly.
